What is a digital identity? Think about the times you’ve used a credit card or email address to complete a transaction online. Or the time you had to use your driver’s license, medicare or concession cards to verify your identity. Every time you use the internet you leave a digital trail behind. All of these pieces of personal data is scattered across data basis, platforms and social networks, saying something about us.

By putting all the pieces of the puzzle together we start to see a picture of who you are and what your interests are. This is called your digital identity.

Wladawsky-Berger (2016) illustrates that an identity system mainly contains four components:                                                                                                                                 Users: entities that engage in transactions.                                                                                       Identity providers: entities that complete the transactions on behalf of others.                   Relying parties: entities that accept authentication about the user to access the services.   Governance body: entities that owns the operating standards and requirements.

Realising that the internet is such a vast domain of identities how are we as teachers able to safeguard our students by being digitally safe when using the internet? It is our due responsibility to ensure that we monitor and filter any access shared by students and continue to maintain secure networks within the classroom and school environment.

iKeepsafe (2010-2017) recommends ways in which teachers are able to achieve digital security is by securing the digital devices, secure the data, and back up data. By monitoring and explaining to students why and how to protect their digital identities we can prevent any misconduct that might occur as well as keeping the devices and networks safe and secure.

It is important for teachers to discuss with students, peers and IT the necessity of online security to ensure that there is a mutual understanding of what measures to take when going online. “All students should be able to learn and develop in safe, supportive and respectful environments” (Dep. of Edu., 2016).
